Screenshots are a great way to save and share the things you see on your screen. Whether it’s a funny cat photo you stumbled upon, or an important document you need to reference later, taking screenshots of your Chromebook OS is super easy. In this post, we’ll walk you through the three simple steps to take a screenshot on your Chromebook and get that image file saved somewhere safe. You never know when it will come in handy.

What’s the Difference Between a Screenshot and a Screen Capture?

A screenshot is a picture of what’s on your computer screen at a certain moment in time. A screen capture is a snapshot of your computer screen that includes both what you can see on your computer monitor, as well as anything that is “under the hood” like pop-up menus, toolbars, and other computer system information. For simplicity, we’ll just refer to all these as screenshots from here on out.

How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook

Taking a screenshot on your Chromebook is super easy. You don’t even have to download an app for it. Here are the three steps you need to follow to take a screenshot on your Chromebook:

Step 1: Press the “Esc” and “PrtScn” buttons at the same time. This key combination will immediately take a screenshot of whatever is currently on your screen. Hold down the buttons for one second then release. You’ll hear a short sound effect, and a small notification will appear in your lower toolbar, letting you know that the screenshot was saved.

If you use a laptop, be sure to close the lid before pressing these buttons. If you don’t, the screenshot will be taken with the lid open — which isn’t what you want!

Step 2: Find the screenshot and save it. Once you’ve taken the screenshot, a notification will appear in your lower right-hand corner. Click on this notification to open the screenshot.

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see three options: Save, Share, and Delete. Select “Save” to save the screenshot to your computer. You can also press “Edit” and use a few built-in tools to enhance your screenshot before saving it.

Step 3: Find your screenshot. You’ll find your screenshot in the Files app. You can open the Files app by clicking the Files icon in the dock. Inside the Files app, you have access to all your saved files. Navigate to the “Screenshots” folder inside the “Pictures” folder to find your screenshot.

Where Can You Find Your Screenshots?

If you’re using a Windows laptop, you probably know where all your screenshots are — they’re probably saved in the Pictures folder of your Pictures library.

With Mac, however, you’ll find your screenshots in a couple places. If you’re using the old screenshot method, your screenshot will be saved in the desktop. If you use the new screenshot method, you’ll find your screenshot in the desktop, too.

With Chromebook, you’ll find your screenshots in the Files app.

You can open the Files app by clicking the Files icon in the dock. Inside the Files app, you have access to all your saved files. Navigate to the “Screenshots” folder inside the “Pictures” folder to find your screenshot.

How to Edit and Share your Chromebook Screenshots

Once you’ve taken your screenshot, you can edit it if you’d like. You can add arrows, text, and other special effects. You can also crop, resize, and rotate your screenshot before saving or sharing it.

This can come in handy if your screenshot is too big or too small and you need to edit it. You can also easily share your screenshot with friends and family.

Simply click the “Share” button at the bottom of the screenshot and select which method you’d like to use. If you have a Chromebook with a touch screen, you can also draw or highlight on your screenshot using your finger or stylus pen.

Shortcut to quickly take a screenshot on Chromebook

If you don’t want to use the method we’ve outlined above, you can take a screenshot with a keyboard shortcut. All you need to do is press “Ctrl” and “Shift” and then “PrtScn”. With Chromebook, you can also use your voice to take a screenshot. Just say “Hey Google, take a screenshot” or “OK, Google, take a screenshot”

3 Ways to Edit your Chromebook Screenshot

If you want to add arrows, text, or other effects to your screenshot, you can do that right in the Files app. You can also use the integrated Google Image search to search for images to add to your screenshot. You can also use Google Drive to edit your screenshots. Open the Google Drive app and click “New” to create a new document. Click on “Editing tools” in the menu and select “Screenshots”. You can crop, resize, add arrows and text, and even edit multiple screenshots at once.

2 Ways to Save Your Chromebook Screenshot

You can save your screenshot in two ways: You can either save it as a file or as a “copy”. If you save as a file, it will be in your Downloads folder.

This can be a good option if you just want to keep the screenshot for yourself. If you save as a “copy”, the screenshot will be saved in your Google Drive. This can be a good option if you want to share the screenshot with others or you need to keep it for future reference.
