A morgue or mortuary (in a hospital or elsewhere) is a place used for the storage of human corpses awaiting identification (ID), removal for autopsy, respectful burial, cremation or other methods of disposal. In modern times, corpses have customarily been refrigerated to delay decomposition. One key difference is that only a mortuary offers on-site cremation. The mortuary may or may not involve a funeral director (although in some states a funeral director is required to be involved). The facility may be much more basic and not focused on the comfort of the consumer.

If a body is left untreated at room temperature, it will deteriorate quickly, so at the funeral parlour it will be put into a refrigerated unit until the death is registered. Then, with the family’s permission, the body can be embalmed. For bodies that will be buried, embalming happens at the mortuary, the body is dressed and fixed with makeup for the wake, and the body is placed in the coffin. Mortuaries may also transport the coffin to the cemetery. Bodies are also cremated at the mortuary.

A few days after the death, the deceased person will need to be transported to a mortuary, where they can be kept in refrigerated conditions for around 4-6 weeks. Depending on the space available in the hospital morgue, you will typically be allowed anywhere from three days to three weeks to remove the body from the hospital. Morgue attendants, sometimes called morgue assistants, play an important role in the postmortem examination process. They assist pathologists in preparing bodies and organ specimens for examination, while also maintaining the morgue room, supplies and equipment.
