Requirements For Diploma In Nursing In Uganda

The Diploma in General Nursing Programme has been designed to provide nurses with an opportunity to upgrade their qualification for being able to acquire licence and practice as Registered Nurse. Completion of the Degree provide access to post-basic (post-graduate) qualifications offered at Universities in the field or where appropriate cognate fields as Nursing Education, Nursing management; Primary Health Care; Occupational Health Care.

This is a three year program of study for the direct entry students and one and a half years for the completion program (upper grading). The diploma program is under the Department of Nursing and Midwifery which is an autonomous entity under the School of Health Sciences. Diploma in Nursing is a 3 year-long diploma course that deals with the requirements of patients and treatments for saving their lives. Some of the core topics that students study are fundamentals of nursing, First aid, Mental health and psychology, pediatric nursing, etc.

Depending on your academic background and clinical experience, being a nurse will even represent a major advantage when it comes to gathering medical school prerequisites and explaining your motivations to become a doctor. One must have worked for 5 years and above and from a recognized health facility. This applies to both Enrolled and Registered Midwives. All nurses and midwives working in Uganda must have a general license to practice and this has to be renewed every 3 years.

Requirements For Diploma In Nursing In Uganda

Duration six years. For candidates directly from Secondary school. Applicant MUST have been in school 3 years prior to application. Applicant MUST have completed their A-Level and obtained at least 2 principal passes, one of which MUST be in Biology.

Applicants must have completed ‘A’ level with at least 1 principal pass in Biology, and 2 subsidiaries in Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture, Math, obtained at the same sitting. Must have ‘O’ level or/and ‘A’ level certificate, UNMC practicing licence, UNMEB certificate and must have worked for at least 2 years.

The minimum requirements for admission to any Undergraduate degree programme are: Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 2 principal passes. Diploma holders must have passed with at least a credit.
