VAT registered businesses add VAT to their sales invoices and can reclaim any VAT included in the items they have bought. If you are not VAT registered you still have to pay the VAT on your purchases but are unable to reclaim it.
Value-added tax (VAT) VAT is governed by the VAT Act and administered by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). VAT is charged at the rate of 18% on the supply of most goods and services in the course of business in Uganda. Specified goods and services, as well as exports outside of Uganda, attract a zero rate of tax.
Process For VAT Registration In Uganda
Log on to your country VAT website and click on the registration tab. Add information and attach documents as request for your company. You may be allocated a temporary VAT registration number. Once the verification is done you will be allocated your Permanent VAT registration number.
Create or logon to your eFiling profile.
Navigate to Registered Details functionality.
Select Maintain Registered Details on the left menu.
The Maintain Registered Details screen will display.
Select VAT under My tax products > Revenue on the left menu.
Applying For VAT Exemption In Uganda
Go to www.ura.go.ug and log in to your account with your TIN and password.
Under e-services,click on e-registration and then under “others” select.
Under Application Details,Select Application type from the drop down.
Enter your Tax payer Identification Number (TIN)
Select period of exemption from the drop down menu.
Ways To Qualifies For VAT Registration In Uganda
The annual threshold for VAT registration is UGX 150 million. Persons who make supplies that are Vatable and whose turnover exceeds UGX 150 million are required to register for VAT with the URA. VAT-registered persons are required to: Charge VAT whenever they make supplies that are Vatable.

Ways Of Getting VAT Registration Certificate In Uganda
Log in to Government Gateway. You’ll need the username and password you created when setting up your Government Gateway account.
Select ‘View your VAT account’ You’ll see this on the first page of the Government Gateway after login.

Invoice Requirements VAT In Uganda
Your business and customer’s name and address.
A unique identification number (invoice number)
The invoice issue date and date of supply.
A description of the items included in the sale.
The cost of each product or service.
Any discounts.
The total amount due.
Payment Of VAT URA
Taxpayer registers a payment either at the URA Tax Office, AEC Accounts Office or the URA Web Portal, http://ura.go.ug and prints a Payment Registration Slip (PRS) valid for 21 days. Taxpayer presents PRS together with corresponding payment instrument to bank teller of the bank declared in the PRS for payment.
