Adolescent Friendly Services In Uganda

Reproductive services that are accessible to, acceptable by and appropriate for adolescents and young people are called adolescent- and youth-friendly reproductive health (AYFRH) services. The characteristics of AYFRH services relate to the service providers, the health facility itself, and the programme design.

Adolescent friendly services shall be: • Affordable, accessible, available, appropriate, attractive and welcoming to young people. Should observe the needs and rights of the young people. Offered in facilities which observe confidentiality and infection prevention.

Such services that are able to meet such expectations are known as youth friendly services (YFS) and are designed to improve care for the youth. The services include counseling, family planning, Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

There are three key elements to consider when assessing the youth-friendliness of a facility: Operating hours and an appointment system to meet the needs of adolescents; • Design features and local policies to maintain privacy and confidentiality; and • Systems to ensure adequate equipment, drugs and supplies.

Raising teenagers means being attuned to the basic needs of all humans which are even stronger during adolescence: Belonging, Power, Independence and Enjoyment. All human beings have basic needs in addition to food and water. These basic needs are: Belonging, Power, Enjoyment and Independence.

An AFHF is a health facility that provides equitable, accessible, acceptable, appropriate, effective, and quality comprehensive health care and services in an adolescent-friendly environment.

The programme expands the scope of adolescent health programming in India – from being limited to sexual and reproductive health, it now includes in its ambit nutrition, injuries and violence (including gender based violence), non-communicable diseases, mental health and substance misuse.

Special services provided by the AFHS to adolescents are: • monitoring growth and development of adolescent and providing the required information about changes; • promoting healthy diet to prevent malnutrition and obesity; • encouraging adolescents to take missed vaccine doses for immunisation; • counsel them about.
