Antenatal Care Services In Uganda

Antenatal care is the care you get from health professionals during your pregnancy. It’s sometimes called pregnancy care or maternity care. You’ll be offered appointments with a midwife, or sometimes a doctor who specialises in pregnancy and birth (an obstetrician).

Promotion of health and wellbeing via education and support for nutrition, cessation of substance abuse, uptake of family planning, recognition of danger signs and birth preparedness are included as essential components of ANC.

Prenatal visits to a health care provider usually include a physical exam, weight checks, and providing a urine sample. Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, health care providers may also do blood tests and imaging tests, such as ultrasound exams. The care includes various screening tests, diagnostic procedures, prophylactic treatments, some of which are done routinely, and others are provided to the women based on identified problems and risk factors.

Good antenatal care includes regular screening which can detect and prevent early complications such as hypertension and pregnancy diabetes; both of which can dramatically affect the foetus. Early detection means regular monitoring and treatment. During the visit, your doctor or midwife will take a detailed medical history and family history as part of assessing your overall health. This includes finding out about any prior pregnancies, illnesses or operations and what medicines you’re taking, including those from a pharmacy or supermarket.

Through antenatal care, pregnant women can also access micronutrient supplementation, treatment for hypertension to prevent eclampsia, as well as immunization against tetanus. Antenatal care can also provide HIV testing and medications to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
