How Much Is HSG Test In Uganda

Hysterosalpingography, or HSG, is an X-ray test to outline the internal shape of the uterus and show whether the fallopian tubes are blocked. In HSG, a thin tube is threaded through the vagina and cervix. A substance known as contrast material is injected into the uterus.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to find the pathology detected at HSG in patients with infertility in our setting.

Materials and Methods

A retrospective review of 289 consecutive patients who underwent hysterosalpingography using ionic water-soluble contrast media was done at 2 private x-ray units in Kampala.

Clinical notes and radiological findings were analysed for demographic data, uterine status, tubal and pelvic pathology.

Results

The commonest age group seen was 26 – 30yrs. Most were of low parity. Secondary infertility was commoner than primary infertility. Abnormal findings at hysterosalpingography were found in 83.4%. The commonest finding was tubal blockage.

The commonest pathology found on HSG in women presenting with infertility in Kampala is tubal blockage possibly secondary to chronic pelvic inflammation.

The fact that secondary infertility is common points to pelvic infection complicating mismanaged pregnancies, septic abortions or sexually transmitted infections.

A study toestablish associated factors is recommended.

Does HSG help you get pregnant?

Interestingly, some women actually do have greater success getting pregnant naturally after HSG – in fact, the chances can increase as much as 25% for up to three months after the procedure. It may be due to tubal flushing from the oil-based contrast fluid, or even the dye solution enhancing the lining of the uterus.

What is the best time to go for HSG test?

It is best to have HSG done in the first half of the menstrual cycle (days 1 to 14). This timing reduces the chance that you may be pregnant. During HSG, a contrast agent is placed in the uterus and fallopian tubes.

What are the side effects of HSG test?

These side effects are normal and will eventually go away.

  • fever.
  • severe pain and cramping.
  • foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • fainting.
  • heavy vaginal bleeding.
  • vomiting.
