What Is National ID?

The Uganda National Identification Card is a National document that is issued to all and only citizens of Uganda of or above the age of 18 years. The Card is a bio-metrically enhanced, machine readable card with digitally embedded information about the holder. One’s information can ONLY be accessed by law.

How To Apply For National ID In Uganda

Uganda – Obtain a National Identification Card

  1. Prepare all the required documents for the application of your National Identity Card.
  2. Visit any parish at your sub-county or any NIRA office in your region.
  3. Request for the application from 3, fill it and attach all the documents to it.

What Is The Procedure To Apply For National ID In Uganda?

  3. Request for the application from 3, fill it and attach all the documents to it.
  4. If there is a queue, sit and wait for your turn and present the application form with the attached documents to the registration officer.
  5. The officer will verify your documents if the details provided are correct and will direct you to another station.
  6. At this station your biometric data will be collected i.e. your fingerprints and photo.
  7. You will be instructed when you ID will be ready for collection.
  8. You can also check you ID application status by dialling *216# and access your National Identification Number (NIN)

Note:

  • Where a person turns 18 years, they should apply for National Identity Card.
  • within ninety days of turning eighteen years.
  • Application for Identity Cards cannot be delegated, applicants must apply in person.

Can I Apply For Ugandan National ID Online?

Please note that this application can not be done online. Every applicant must register for their Identity Card in person and collect it in person.

The Required Documents To Apply For National ID In Uganda

Citizens by birth
Citizens of Uganda by birth must present the following requirements:
Mandatory

  • Copy of National ID of both or either parent (if parents are alive)
  • A certified copy of a birth certificate

In the absence of the above, attach the following

  • Recommendation letter from LC 1 chairman stating clearly that applicant is known indicating,
  • Applicant’s names
  • Details of parents
  • period of stay in LC1 locality
  • Tribe and clan
  • The letter should be signed with official stamp of LC1 Chairperson (include Telephone contact) and GISO/DISO
  • Identification bearing applicant’s photo

Dual Citizenship

  • Certified copy of certificate of Dual Citizenship
  • Passport of current country of residence

Citizens by Registration

  • Certified copy of Certificate of Citizenship by registration issued by National Citizenship and Immigration Control Board (NCIB)
  • Identification bearing applicant’s photo

Naturalization

  • certified copy of Certificate of Naturalization as Ugandan issued by NCIB
  • Identification bearing applicant’s photo.

  • Where it is possible, all persons are encouraged to apply to be registered within the parish/sub-county of their places of origin or residence. This is particularly important because it is most likely the place where you and your parents/ancestors are best known for the purpose of identification and citizenship verification.
  • For persons originating or with ethnic connections with border communities, you are encouraged to as much as possible go back to these places for registration.

Need For The Document To Apply For National ID In Uganda

There are many situations where you need to prove that who you are. The identity card will allow you to do this in number of ways;

  • Proving Age
  • Traveling abroad within the East African Region (as per the signed protocols allowing for the use of the National Identity Card across the region)
  • On day to day basis for identification to law enforcement officers.

How Do I Register For A National ID In Uganda?

Naturalization or certificate of citizenship by registration as appropriate. Any other supporting documents e.g. copy of birth certificate, passport, Marriage certificate, academic documents, driving permit, baptism card, voter’s card etc. Copy of NID of parents (Where available).

  • Birth Certificate issued by PSA (formerly NSO) and one government-issued ID which contains the applicant’s full name, photo, and signature or thumb mark; or.
  • Valid Philippine passport.
  • Unified Multi-purpose Identification (UMID) card issued by SSS or GSIS; or.
