Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) 2023/2024 Entry Requirements

HKMU Entry requirements are formal criteria you HKMU meet in order to be considered for a degree course you’re applying to at the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU).

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES ERNTRY REQUIREEMENTS

MASTER OF MEDICINE (MMED)

Entry requirements:

Holder of a good MD or MBChB degree or equivalent, normally with at least B grade in the subject intended for specialization. And a working experience of at least one year as a Medical Officer after internship.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PUBLIC HEALTH (MScPH)

Entry Requirements:

Holders of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent, BSc. Nursing, BSc. Environmental Health, BSc. Laboratory Technology or equivalent, Doctor of Dental Surgery, and Bachelor of Pharmacy or equivalent. Nurses and pharmacists must have obtained at least lower second class.
Graduates of recognized University with at least upper second class in health-related fields of study such as sociology, anthropology, health statistics, health economics, epidemiology, demography, biology, nutrition, food science and health information sciences.
Working experience with communities in health related fields at a district or higher level would be advantageous.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

DOCTOR OF MEDICINE (MD)

Entry requirements:

Direct entry

Applicants must have completed form VI or its equivalent with three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum entry of 8 points. Whereby one must have at least C grade in Chemistry and Biology and at least D grade in Physics.

Equivalent qualifications

Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least five (5) passes including two credit passes in Chemistry and Biology and a D grade in Physics PLUS appropriate Diploma or Advanced Diploma with an average of B+ or GPA of 3.5
II. BSc Lower second majoring in Physics/Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Zoology.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSCN)

Direct entry

Applicants must have completed from VI or its equivalent with three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Mathematics or Nutrition with a minimum of 6 points. Whereby one must have at least C grade in Chemistry and at lease D grade in Biology and E grade in Physics or Mathematics or Nutrition.

Equivalent qualification

Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least Five (5) passes including two credit passes in Chemistry and Biology and a D grade in Physics PLUS appropriate Diploma or Advanced Diploma with an average of B+ or GPA of 3.5
BSc Lower second majoring in Physics/Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Zoology

DIPLOMA AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

BASIC CERTIFICATE (NTA LEVEL 4) IN SOCIAL WORK

Admission requirements

Applicants for Basic Certificate in Social Work (NTA Level 4) must have the following minimum qualifications: certificate of secondary education with minimum of FOUR PASSES excluding religious subjects or National Vocational Award (NVA) level 3 (with at least 3 passes of CSE).

TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE (NTA level 5) IN SOCIAL WORK

Admission requirements

NTA level 4 in Social work.
Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education with at least one principal and subsidiary pass excluding religious subjects.
Technician certificate in Social work related occupations

ORDINARY DIPLOMA (NTA LEVEL 6) IN SOCIAL WORK

Admission requirements

Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Social work.

DIPLOMA IN NURSING IN- SERVICE PROGRAMME (THROUGH E-LEARNING)

Entry requirements:

Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA level 5) in Nursing with “D” pass in Biology, Chemistry or Physics (CSEE) for the graduates starting from 2010; OR Graduates before NTAs system should have certificate in Nursing and Midwifery/Public Health Nurse B and at least “D” Pass in any of science subject; AND Work experience of two (2) years and above, Necessary Attachments: Register and License to practice by TNMC, Technician Certificate and Transcript in the related field and Letter of permission from employer.

DIPLOMA IN NURSING IN-SERVICE PROGRAMME (CONVENTIONAL PROGRAMME)

Entry requirements:

Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA level 5) in Nursing with “D” pass in Biology, Chemistry or Physics (CSEE) for the graduates starting from 2010; OR Graduates before NTAs system should have certificate in Nursing and Midwifery/Public Health Nurse B and at least “D” Pass in any of science subject; and work experience of two (2) years and above. Necessary Attachments: Register and License to practice by TNMC, Technician Certificate and Transcript in the related field and Letter of permission from the employer.

DIPLOMA IN NURSING (NTA LEVEL 4-6) PRE-SERVICES PROGRAMME

Entry requirements:

Applicants, who are holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE), with four (4) passes in non-religious subjects including a “D” passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics / Engineering Sciences

	i) At least a GPA of 3.0 for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6); OR
	ii) Average of “C” for Full Technician Certificate (FTC) (where A=5, B=4, C=3, and D=2 points); OR
	iii) Average of “B‟ Grade for Diploma in Teacher Education; OR
	iv) Average of” B+‟ Grade for Health-related awards such as Clinical Medicine and others; OR
	v) A Distinction for unclassified Diplomas and certificates; OR
	vi) Upper Second Class for classified non-NTA Diplomas.
FoundationProgramme of the OUT	A GPA of 3.0 accumulated from six core subjects and at least a C grade from three subjects in a respective cluster (Arts, Science and Business Studies) PLUS An Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least 1.5 from two subjects ORAn Ordinary Diploma from the recognized institution with a GPA of at least 2.0 OR NTA level 5 /Professional Technician Level II Certificate.

Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) Minimum Entry Requirements for all post graduate programmes

Admission into	Minimum Admission Entry Qualifications
Postgraduate Certificate programme	At least a Bachelor Degree (UQF level 8).
Postgraduate Diploma programme	A Postgraduate Certificate OR Bachelor Degree (UQF level 8) with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or C grade.
Master Degreeprogramme (all types)	a) A relevant academic Bachelor Degree (UQF level 8) or equivalent with GPA of 2.7 or B grade;b) A Postgraduate Diploma in relevant discipline/area or equivalent with minimum GPA of 3.0 or B grade; and c) A Professional training qualification with additional relevant training, evidence of research capability and relevant working experience.
Phd programme (alltypes)	A Master Degree (UQF level 9) in relevant discipline/area or equivalent with a minimum of GPA of 3.0 or B grade.

Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) general Entry Requirements for certificate and diploma Programmes

For an applicant to be eligible for admission into certificate and diploma Programmes, he/she HKMU satisfy the minimum entry requirements of four passes in non-religious subjects in Certificate of secondary education examination (CSEE). However, there are some programme requirements that are specific to certain programmes.
