List Of Medicinal Plants In Uganda

A medicinal plant is any plant which contains one or more of its organs, substances that can be used for therapeutic purposes or which are precursors for chemopharmaceutical semi-synthesis. The knowledge of medicnal plants and their uses in Uganda could be traced to early civilization.

Developments in the use of medicinal plants in Uganda have taken place through the per-colonial, colonial and post-colonial era. Both indigenous and introduced medicinal plants have been used. Many of them are on the list of endengered species as a result of social and economic progress.

Data in this paper were obtained through literature review, reports from field surveys on medicinal plants in Uganda, chemical analysis and pharmacological testing of the plant ingredients. The findings of the research indicate that most of our medicinal plants are potent.

The medicinal plants may be divided into three categories, namely: the herbal drug, the chemopharmaceutical-medicinal and the unexploited but potential medicnal plants. Our findings have indicated that there have been constraints to the use and development of medicinal plants in Uganda, although there are positive indicators towards that goal.

A clear governments policy should aim at developing the practice of medicinal plant use, conserving, and even expanding on the existing species.
