The Private-not-for-profit (PNFP) health sector is better known to most under the name of “Church” or “Mission” Hospitals and Dispensaries. By no means all the PNFP health units belong to Churches: nonetheless the largest majority of them do.

The number of health facilities (public, private and private not for profit) in Uganda now totals 6,937. 45.16% (3,133) of health facilities are Government owned, 14.44% (1,002) are Private and Not For Profit (PNFP) while the remaining 40.29% (2,795) are Private For Profit (PFP) and 0.10% (7) community-owned facilities.

The Government and PNFPs are mostly higher levels of health facilities while the Private For Profit facilities majorly consists of lower levels (HC IIs and clinics).

Uganda’s health facilities are classified into seven levels based on the services they provide and the catchment area they are intended to serve. The health facilities are designated as Health Centre level one (HC I) to Health Centre Level four (HC IV); General hospital, Regional Referral hospital and National Referral hospital.
