Why protected areas are important?

Protected areas provide for life’s essentials. They protect natural resources that are critical to many people on earth. Within these areas, genetic diversity is permitted to evolve in response to natural selection pressures. These genetic resources are a source of many new products.

What are threats to protected areas?

Some of the most common threats to protected areas include: development and encroachment; agriculture-related threats such as conversion to plantations; energy-related threats such as drilling and mining; transportation, such as roads and ship lanes; human intrusions, including unregulated recreation.

How effective are protected areas?

They provide safe havens for endangered species, store carbon, generate much of our clean air and water, harbour sites of cultural and spiritual importance, and support the livelihoods of millions of people. Protected areas have a critical role to play in tackling the global nature crisis.
