Who Is A Midwife?

A midwife is a health professional trained to support and care for women during pregnancy, labour and birth. They help you to stay healthy in pregnancy and, if no complications arise, to give birth with little intervention. Midwives also care for you and your baby in the first few weeks following the birth.

An understanding and caring attitude.

An ability to get on well with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Emotional and mental strength.

Good observation.

An ability to act on own initiative.

Patience.

Maturity.

Willingness to take responsibility.

What Jobs Can A Midwife Do In Uganda?

Examining and monitoring pregnant women.

Assessing care requirements and writing care plans.

Undertaking antenatal care in hospitals, homes and GP practices.

Carrying out screening tests.

Providing information, emotional support and reassurance to women and their partners.

How Many Years Does It Take To Study Midwifery In Uganda?

This is a 3 years, 6 semesters Basic General Midwifery programme, approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Uganda.

What Subjects Do I Need To Be A Midwife In Uganda?

You will need at least 2 A Levels, one of which must be a Science subject in order to qualify for a midwifery degree. Although in the interest of giving you the best start, Biology is the obvious choice. Chemistry and a social science such as Psychology or Sociology are good complementary qualifications too.

What Is The Difference Between Nursing And Midwifery In Uganda?

NURSING training is basically on helping patients with medical and surgical conditions while Basic MIDWIFERY is basically helping women during pregnancy, labour, and postpaturm (after birth). A NURSE can work in many different medical areas/units while a MIDWIFE majorly works only in labor and delivery.

What Grades Do I Need To Study Midwifery In Uganda?

Each university sets its own entry requirements to get onto a full-time degree in midwifery (as do employers offering degree apprenticeships), but as a general guide you’ll need at least 5 9-4/A-C grade GCSEs (including English and a science subject) and at least 2 (preferably 3) A’ levels – biology may be required.

Is Midwifery A Difficult Course In Uganda?

Midwifery is a demanding course, with long hours and high workload for three full years. Rest while you can. Treat yourself to a few extra hours’ sleep and enjoy time off with friends and family while the time is there. There’s plenty of time for study when September comes around.
