A trade union is an organisation made up of members (a membership-based organisation) and its membership must be made up mainly of workers. One of a trade union’s main aims is to protect and advance the interests of its members in the workplace. Most trade unions are independent of any employer.

The National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) is the sole national trade union centre in Uganda, and is responsible for co-ordinating the Uganda labour movement and the activities of all registered trade organisations affiliated to it.
Among Uganda’s trade unions, there are many noteworthy examples, such as the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union (ATGWU), which is responsible for organising and representing its members in the transport, oils, chemical and private security industries; the Uganda Medical Workers’ Union (UMWU), which represents the rights of the health workers in the country; and the Uganda Hotel, Food, Tourism and Allied Workers’ Union (UHFTAWU).

What is the role of trade unions in Uganda?
Labour unions are organisations of workers created by workers to represent their rights and interests. The Constitution of Uganda provides for freedom of association while Labor Unions Act allows the workers to establish and join unions. Workers are allowed to participate in union activities outside working hours.
What are the challenges faced by trade unions in Uganda?
Limited resources to finance labour union activities, limited membership and non-recognition of labour union by majority of employers and employees were found to be the common challenges faced by labour unions.
