Youth Organizations In Uganda
Following research, today we want to spotlight just a few of the many Ugandan youth-led organisations that do an incredible job to address youth issues and fight some of the causes and symptoms of poverty and injustice. We would like to show the world just how amazing young people are influencing and changing Uganda for the better:
Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU)
RAHU is a youth-led non-profit organization focused on youth empowerment programs with an emphasis on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Their focus is on changing social norms and values that limit access to SRHR services and information through designing effective communication strategies and campaigns to create awareness and mitigate sexual health risks among the young people today.
Uganda Youth Network (UYONET)
UYONET is a national youth organization that works to mainstream young peoples’ engagement in development and governance processes in Uganda. Started in 2002, UYONET has evolved into a premier youth organization, registering phenomenal growth in stature through fostering positive change by mobilizing youth consciousness and nurturing young ethical leadership across the country.
Hire the Youth
Hire the youth believes that irrespective of background, young people should be independent, happy, flourish, and get a job. It is a new youth-led initiative with the aim to support & empower young people against employment challenges in Uganda. Apart from availing youth-friendly job opportunities that can help them transit to employment, they also provide a platform where they can express themselves on issues affecting them. Hire the Youth aims to help young people aged 15-30 who are in/out of school, unemployed or underemployed overcome the barriers to employment by pushing forward campaigns that drive educational reforms and youth empowerment. The goal is to make society more inclusive, fair and responsive to young people’s unemployment challenges. The online initiative also provides information about different youth opportunities, which help the youth to make connections, achieve their goals, and live a fulfilling life.
Action for Fundamental Change & Development (AFFCAD)
AFFCAD is a predominantly youth-led organisation with a vision for a “world free of poverty“. Its mission is to empower slum communities economically through developing skills that mitigate extreme vulnerabilities. To change things and improve the prospects and lives of people living in slum communities, AFFCAD runs three major programmes— health, education and economic empowerment in Kampala’s poorest slum communities. They impart technical, vocational and life skills, creating awareness on sexual reproductive health alongside supporting vulnerable communities including people infected and affected by the scourge of HIV/AIDS. The organization has founded a community school that provides formal education to orphaned children and those from HIV/AIDS and poverty affected families. It has also opened a vocational training center in Bwaise to provide vocational skills to youth, create linkages to services and information, and encourage social and livelihood skills development for self-reliance.
Youth Connect-Uganda
A youth-led social enterprise, Youth Connect-Uganda believes in the potential of synergy and in the domino effect of bringing together creative and entrepreneurial minds. The aim is to create a youth-hub and safe space for emerging creative-artists & social activists and one that fosters the tenets of mutual and civil dialogue. To achieve their mission of creating a fertile ecosystem enabling ideas to come to life, they organize a series of monthly events to cater for both the emerging creative artists (e.g. photographers, spoken word artist-poets, dancers, fine-artists, musicians, graphic designers, fashion enthusiasts) and emerging social activists. Each year, Youth Connect-Uganda organises an adventurous outdoor camp that among other things, features Meditation on the MDGs/SDGs, Youth Entrepreneurship panels, Culture, Human Rights, and outdoor games.
