Mobile money stores funds in a secure electronic account linked to a mobile phone number. In some cases the wallet number will be the same as the phone number, but not always they can be different. Before sending funds to a mobile money wallet, please check with your recipient to determine the correct number. While MTN Mobile Money could already be used informally by customers to make payments to vendors, MoMo Pay simplifies and streamlines the process and offers reduced customer transaction fees.
Users can load their MTN Mobile Money accounts with cash at agent locations nationwide and then make domestic and international P2P money transfers, buy mobile phone top-up, purchase goods or pay bills. All transactions are completed securely by entering a PIN number. A bank account is not required to use mobile money services the only pre-requisite is a basic mobile phone. On the other hand, mobile banking is the use of an application on a mobile device to access and execute banking services, such as check deposits, balance inquiry, and payment transfers.
Mobile money services are highly accessible to all segments of society for three reasons: they are faster, more convenient and cheaper than formal financial services. Mobile phones are introducing financial services in remote areas where conventional banks have been physically absent or remain too expensive. Their purchase is paid for using funds stored in their MoMoPay wallet. Funds settle to the merchants directly, and transactions can be tracked by logging into the Merchant Access Portal (MAP).
