How much does OC Police earn in Uganda?

Police undersecretary/accounting officer Aggrey Wunyi told New Vision in a separate interview that the current wage bill for the Uganda Police Force is sh383b and that the 40% salary enhancement would require an extra sh153.2b to be allocated to them.

Commenting on Parliament’s recommendation, Wunyi said, “It is a welcome intervention. As you know, the cost of living has become so high and you know police officers work 24 hours in seven days, and therefore, they have no time to do personal activities out of which they can earn an extra income.”

Wunyi explained that since the cabinet had taken a decision to increase salaries for all the least-paid public servants, they have been eagerly waiting for its implementation.

Wunyi said the lowest police officers are earning sh475,000, while Special Police Constables earn sh325,000 each.

If the 40% salary enhancement Parliament has proposed is implemented, it means that the lower police officer, who is currently earning sh475,000 will have their salary increased by sh190,000 to sh665,000.

A police constable, who is currently earning sh325000 will have their salary increased by sh130,000 to sh455,000.

Whereas the highest-paid police staff like police pilots earn sh16m each, the Inspector General (IGP) of the Police earns only sh6m.

Wunyi noted apart from pilots, there is many other police staff including scientists and legal officers at high ranks who earn much more than what the IGP earns. Wunyi said the highest-paid legal officer in Uganda Police Force earns sh12m.
