Requirements For President Candidacy In Uganda
To become the presidential nominee, a candidate typically has to win a majority of delegates. This usually happens through the party’s state primaries and caucuses. State delegates go to the national convention to vote to confirm their choice of candidates. Chapter 142 of the Presidential Elections Act of 2000 stipulates that presidential candidates must be a citizen of Uganda by birth and be qualified to be an MP. Candidates are also required to be of sound mind and have no formal connection with the Electoral Commission of Uganda.
The president is elected for a five-year term. The Parliament is composed of members directly elected to represent constituencies, and one woman representative for every district; as well representatives of special interest groups, including the army, youth, workers and persons with disabilities. The Electoral Commission of Uganda, also Uganda Electoral Commission, is a constitutionally established organ of the Government of Uganda, whose mandate is to “organise and conduct regular, free and fair elections” in the country, in an efficient, professional and impartial manner.
The Constitution lists only three qualifications for the Presidency the President must be at least 45 years of age, be a natural born citizen, and must have lived in Uganda for at least 14 years. Under the Constitution of Uganda, the president is the executive head of state. The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. In the event of a vacancy, the vice president serves as acting president.
