Youth Friendly Services In Uganda

User friendly (acceptable or appealing) to young people between the ages of 10 and 24. The term is used to describe elements of health care that are accessible to and comfortable for preteens, adolescents, and young adults. Youth-friendly services should be accessible to all adolescents and young people regardless of your age, marital status, HIV status, sexual orientation, gender identity, occupation, social status, geographical location or ability to pay. These services must be confidential, non-judgmental and private.

Adolescent Friendly Reproductive Health Services Program (AFRHS) is a program that focuses on the welfare of adolescents through guidance on how to maximize the use of health care services. Reproductive services that are accessible to, acceptable by and appropriate for adolescents and young people are called adolescent- and youth-friendly reproductive health (AYFRH) services. The characteristics of AYFRH services relate to the service providers, the health facility itself, and the programme design.

A Youth-friendly Corner is a safe zone for young people. It is a place where adolescents can access health information concerning their lives, and non-judgmental services relating to reproductive health. It is also a healthy environment for “hanging out” and developing some life skills. Special services provided by the AFHS to adolescents are: • monitoring growth and development of adolescent and providing the required information about changes; • promoting healthy diet to prevent malnutrition and obesity; • encouraging adolescents to take missed vaccine doses for immunisation; • counsel them.

The term “reproductive health services” means reproductive health services provided in a hospital, clinic, physician’s office, or other facility, and includes medical, surgical, counselling or referral services relating to the human reproductive system, including services relating to pregnancy or the termination. Peer education is one of the effective strategies used to improve young people’s reproductive and sexual health outcomes by providing the knowledge, skills and beliefs necessary to lead healthy lives. Adolescent family life education is an effective adolescent health promotion strategy.
