The school was founded in 1955, under the British Colonial Government Policy of training health workers to address and promote preventive, rehabilitative as well as curative care in Ugandan communities. The school started with the training of enrolled nurses, and then upgraded to registered nursing level in 1962. Midwifery started in 1967

Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the direct entry into the Diploma in Nursing Programme, a candidate must satisfy the following admission criteria: –
O level Results: – Credits in the following subjects; English, Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
A level Results:- A principal pass in Biology and two subsidiaries in Chemistry, Physics, Food and Nutrition and Mathematics. Apply using JAB forms
-Conform to the standards of Medical fitness by the Training Authority and Public Service.
-Age limit 18-25years
B) Extensor Diploma Programmes – Course duration 1.5 years (May intake)
- Diploma in Nursing
- Diploma in Midwifery
Entry requirements
To be eligible for either of the above courses, one must have enrolled with Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Council and with a working experience of at least 2years:
-Enrolled Nurse or Midwifery – Should be at least in possession of “O” level certificate -Pass a pre-entry Ministry of Education and sports Oral and Written Interviews.
Age limit 25 years – 45years
On successful completion of the State Final Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB) candidates are registered by Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) and issued a practicing certificate.
