Galaxy International School Uganda (GISU) is a co-educational school located in Lubowa, 10km from Kampala, along the Kampala-Entebbe Road. Turn off before Roofings Ltd. and continue along the main road through the housing estate, about 300 metres from Quality Supermarket, the school is on the left.
Early Years
The Early Years classes at Galaxy International School Uganda have modern facilities and the latest technology. They are also in a prime location which is conducive to learning.
We have an experienced team of qualified staff who are passionate about facilitating learning for Kindergarten Two, Kindergarten Three and Reception.
Our facilities include: a basketball court, swimming pool, large indoor play room, audio-visual room and resting rooms.
CURRICULUM
GISU follows the Foundation Stage English National Curriculum in Kindergarten and Reception. This is a child-centred curriculum which is carefully structured to maximize learner’s knowledge, enjoyment and overall development.
The Foundation Level focuses on six key areas of learning:
- Personal, social and emotional development.
- Communication, language and literacy.
- Mathematical development.
- Knowledge and understanding of the world.
- Physical development.
- Creative development.
The Early Years curriculum emphasises the development of receptive and productive skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening; as well as personal study skills like concentration, co-operation with other children and a questioning mind.
There is also a strong focus on early literacy and numeracy skills that will prepare young learners to progress to Key Stage One of the Cambridge Curriculum.
TEACHING AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Our enthusiastic and dedicated team of specialist Early Years teachers provide high-quality learning experiences for our children. We care about each child as an individual and help them to believe in themselves and what they can achieve.
We believe in child-centred learning and employ a variety of fun, active methods to help us achieve this aim.
The international nature of the school is such that children are encouraged to share their cultural traditions with the class, and the whole class gets involved in planning and celebrating festivals from all over the world. We encourage tolerance, respect and admiration for different cultures.
We believe in using technology as a learning tool from an early age. Kindergarten One children have small computers appropriate to their age. Educational software supports lessons in numeracy and literacy.
Each child is monitored by teachers to ensure that they are progressing to an appropriate standard, and tasks are differentiated according to ability.
At GISU, we recognize the important role parents have to play in supporting their child’s education. For this reason, we welcome you to take an active role in your child’s schooling and provide opportunities for parental participation in school activities.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
At GISU, we believe that serving others is essential to live a rich life and become a fully rounded person. To achieve this aim for our students, we provide opportunities for our students to become involved in community development projects in Uganda.
As well as embracing the international diversity of the school, we encourage our students to experience and develop a deep affection for the wonderful culture in which we live: Uganda.
We achieve this by fostering relationships with local, sustainable and transparent community development organisations.
Our Community Service Programmes:
Term one – Identify and visit targeted areas.
Term two – Fundraise and budget for activities.
Term three – Implementation.
EDUCATIONAL TRIPS
Learning does not end when our students leave the classrooms! Early Years students experience a range of indoor and outdoor educational trips, fully supervised at all times by trained staff and qualified first aiders.
Secondary School
The Secondary School adheres to GISU’s slogan, “Educating to inspire global excellence.” Our students are taught in a caring and supportive environment, which treats each person as an individual and challenges all to excel. We place a high emphasis on rigorous academics, sports, community service and the moral education of our students. Our students are expected to show the model behaviour of responsible global citizens, progressing to higher education and then to the world of work.
All students in the Secondary School are prepared for external examinations set and marked by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the world’s leading provider of British-system international examinations. Students in Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9, ages 11 to 14) are prepared for the Cambridge Checkpoint tests in English, mathematics and science. In addition, students study courses French, geography, history, business studies, ICT, art, Turkish or extra English, music, PE and sports.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11, ages 14 to 16) students prepare to take up to a maximum of nine subjects in the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Following their Key Stage 3 years, students study English, mathematics, science, French/Turkish and geography/history. In addition, students may opt to take business studies, art, ICT, music, English literature and P.E.
Students in Years 12 and 13 (ages 16 to 18) study up to four subjects at AS level in Year 12 and three full A level subjects in Year 13 to qualify them for entry to universities worldwide. Cambridge International AS and A Levels are very flexible. Learners have the freedom to select the subjects that are right for them, they can either follow a broad course of study, or specialise in a particular area. GISU offers a wide variety of subjects, from the arts to the sciences and many more. Every year, thousands of Cambridge International A level students gain places at good universities worldwide- including the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Africa.
Primary School
At GISU, the Primary level offers a flexible curriculum with Cambrigde Integrated assessment for children aged 5 to 11. Our teaching focuses on learners’ development in each year and provides a natural progression throughout the 6 years of primary education. It prepares the students for the Secondary 1 Cambridge international education for the learners aged 11-14 (Years 7, 8 and 9).
The Primary Cambridge International Curriculum developes skills and understanding in Mathematics, English, Science and ICT. Children are taught in small class sizes of up to a maximum of 24. This teacher-student ratio enables the teacher to embrace the child-centred approach in teaching. The Science lessons are taught with adequate experiments in the Science Laboratories, with the aid of smart boards.
In Key Stage 1, we strongly emphasise the development of children’s skills and understanding in Reading, Writing, Numeracy and ICT literacy. Students receive support everyday in small groups based on phonetic ability.
Besides the above four key skills, the children learn French, Music, Social studies and P.E. from a team of highly skilled, experienced and enthusiastic specialist teachers.
