Aga Khan University (AKU) Admissions Notice

Admission to the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SoNaM) is based on merit and potential for leadership. Merit is assessed by several criteria including scholastic achievements, performance on the AKU Admission Test and an interview.

Practicing nurses are encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to demonstrate qualities of communication, leadership and a commitment to the nursing profession. Candidates must also have sufficient nursing knowledge and skills appropriate for study at the baccalaureate level.

These qualities will be evaluated through the admission test, letters of reference and a personal interview with each candidate.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery, Uganda invites nurses to apply to the following programmes.

Courses Offered

Post-RN Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Post-RM Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM)

Diploma in General Nursing (EN-RN Conversion)​​

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

POST-RN BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING Route

A: EN-RN to Post-RN BScN

  • Form IV level of education with a minimum aggregate of Division III in the Ordinary Certificate of Education with a “Credit” grade in the following mandatory subjects: English and Biology/Biological Sciences and a “Pass” grade in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Certificate of Registration in General Nursing (RN) with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse.

Route B: RN to Post-RN BScN

  • Form VI qualification with a Principal Pass in Biology/Biological Sciences in “A” Level.
  • Certificate of Registration in General Nursing (RN) with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse.

Graduates of AKU’s Diploma in General Nursing (EN-RN) programme are encouraged to apply.

POST-RMBACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MIDWIFERY

Route A: EM/ECN to RM/RCN to BScM

  • Form IV education; “O” level, with a “Credit” in English and Biology or Biological Sciences, a “Pass” in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and a Division III minimum aggregate.
  • Certificate of Registration issued by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a RM or RCN. Route

B: RM/RCN to BScM

  • “A” Level with a “Principal Pass” in Biology or Biological Sciences.
  • You must have a Certificate of Registration issued by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a RM or RCN Practicing Registered Midwives and Registered Comprehensive Nurses are encouraged to apply.

DIPLOMA IN GENERAL NURSING

Enrolled Nurses, Enrolled Comprehensive Nurses, Registered Midwives and Registered Psychiatric Nurses are encouraged to apply.

  • Form IV level of education with a minimum aggregate of Division III in the Ordinary Certificate of Education.
  • Pass in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
  • Certificate of Enrollment from the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (for enrolment level).
  • Certificate of Registration in Midwifery (RM) with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (for Registration level).
  • At least two years of continuous experience in a clinical care setting.
