BSPN is the only nursing school of its kind in Uganda that trains mental health nurses. Since its inception in 1960, it has trained thousands of nurses who are deployed in Government and private sectors. All female and male Ugandans and across boarders are encouraged to purse the mental health nurses course

Butabika School of psychiatric Nursing Admission Requirement

The applicants must have successfully completed ordinary and/or advanced secondary education or its equivalent for external applicants. Ordinary level applicants must have passes in English, mathematics, Biology, chemistry and physics whereas the advanced must have two principle passes in Biology and Chemistry.

  • Diploma in Mental Health Nursing(Direct and Extension)
  • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing

Courses Offered Under Department of Mental Health

All courses in this department begin in February and November respectively.

Registered Mental Nursing This course is aimed at training and producing competent mental nurse who are capable of rendering effective holistic and comprehensive mental health services.

Enrolled Mental Nursing This is a two and a half year course aimed at equipping nurses with skills enabling them to provide holistic and comprehensive mental health services.

Extension mental health nursing This is a one and a half course for upgrading students from the enrollment to the registration level. It is aimed at equipping the nurses with more skills to offer proficient and competent services. Candidate shall be below 45 years

The school has both Private and Government sponsored students.

Subsequent semesters       shs 142,500

  • Private students 

Semester 1                      shs 937,500

Subsequent semester         shs 592,500
