Definitions for each research Category;

Industry Sponsored research: Research that is externally funded which may be in terms of cooperative agreements, grants, contracts, clinical drug trials or gifts regardless of whether the funds are provided by consortia or individuals.

Foreign Non-Industry Sponsored Research: This is research that is funded by individuals, organizations or research bodies that are not based in Uganda

Local Non-Industry sponsored Research: Research funded by Ugandan organizations, individuals or research bodies

International Students’ Protocols: These are protocols by non- Ugandan students who wish to carry out research in Uganda.

Please note that payment for initial review is compulsory for research submitted to the IHSU-REC for ethical review and approval. And in the event that the researcher needs the process of review to be speeded up (expedited review), an additional fee should be paid as indicated in the table on the previous page.

Also, note that annual review applies to on-going approved studies that exceed a period of one (1) year. Revisions and amendments apply to studies that have been approved but the researcher would like to include a few documents/concepts/ideas to the previous version submitted or approved by the Research Ethics Committee (REC).
