Makerere University School of Public Health Short Courses

Purpose
To enable participants acquire core competencies in health systems research in order to strengthen the
health system and its responsiveness to the needs and expectations of the population.
Objectives of the HSR Course
It is expected that course participants should be able to;
1) Identify appropriate health systems research themes, problems and questions that are context specific
2) Use appropriate research designs and methodologies to investigate priority health system problems
3) Gather, analyse and interpret health systems data, information and evidence for decision making, policy
formulation and programming
4) Design appropriate interventions to address priority health system issues
5) Use monitoring and evaluation tools to improve performance of the health system
6) Package and communicate health system evidence (information) to different stakeholders, while
appreciating the multiple perspectives that are inherent in and can strengthen high-quality HSR
7) Understand professional and research ethics, particularly as related to HSR Targeted Audience
Researchers, Practitioners and students in areas of health policy-making, health service provision, training. Course
participants may come from universities, MOH, NGOs, district-level facilities or district health teams, private practice, or other related fields.

Course structure and module
The HSR short course has two modules with 4 course units.
This will be blended with topical seminars on current health systems issues including COVID-19
Module 1 – Principles and Designs
Unit 1.1 Introduction to Health Systems Research
Unit 1.2 Professional and Research Ethics in Health
Systems Research
Module 2 – Generation, Interpretation & Use of Evidence
Unit 2.1 Designs and approaches in Health Systems
Research
Unit 2.2 Techniques for generating and interpreting HSR data and Information
