Susan Makaire a resident says the students in rural schools don’t perform well in such subjects hence the need to lower pass marks if they are to attract many students to join the institute.
Those admitted on government sponsorship must have excelled in English, Mathematics and Sciences at ‘O’ level which residents insist is hard to attain.
Other complained that tuition for private students is high. According to the tuition structure, a copy seen by URN, students pay 630,000 shillings per term.
Sasiira Technical Institute is part of Skilling Uganda programme launched by government of Uganda in 2012 after realizing very wide skills gaps existed between what was demanded in the labour market and the skills training Institutions were offering.
Last year Nakaseke district leaders also complained of low intake at Nakaseke Technical Institute. The Institute was constructed and equipped at a cost of 13 billion shillings but it is being utilized by few students despite of abundant facilities.
Other technical institutes constructed with loan from the OPEC International Development Fund (OFID) are Corner Kilak, Ogolai 1, Nawanyago, Lwengo, Buhimba, Busoga Nsadhu, Namataba and Lokopio Technical Institute.
